Amazon Fire TV Cube – an all-in-one Alexa-powered speaker and media player

Amazon has unveiled the latest member of its Fire TV family of products – the Fire TV Cube.
The Cube is essentially an Alexa-powered smart speaker, similar to the Amazon Echo, with Fire TV capabilities built in.
So as well as playing music and answering questions, it can link up to your TV and provide access to over 200,000 episodes and movies – with thousands of titles in 4K Ultra HD.
Unlike Amazon’s other Fire TV devices, the Cube doesn’t come with a remote control, so the only way to control it is using the Alexa voice assistant.
The Cube contains eight microphones and “advanced beamforming technology” to filter out background noise, meaning Alexa should be able to hear your requests from across the room..

“As the first far-field Fire TV in the United Kingdom, we’re excited to be delivering easier and quicker ways for our customers to use their device.”
When it comes to streaming quality, the Cube is Amazon’s most powerful Fire TV device to date.
Users will be able to watch 4K Ultra HD content at up to 60 fps, and experience the brilliant colours of HDR thanks to Dolby Vision and HDR 10+ technology.
The Cube also includes Dolby Atmos surround-sound technology, meaning that audio clarity should be top notch.
Like Amazon’s Echo speakers, the Cube can be used to listen to music, check the weather, listen to the news, set timers and get answers to questions – even when the TV is switched off.
It can also be used to control compatible smart home devices, including cameras, thermostats, lights, doorbells, TVs, soundbars and A/V receivers.
However, Alexa responses are optimised for the big screen and accompanied with visual information where possible.
So you can view your compatible smart home camera feeds, watch video flash briefings, view sports scores, see extended weather forecasts, and watch film trailers on your TV.
The Fire TV Cube is available for pre-order now at www.amazon.co.uk/firetvcube for £109.99, and will start shipping on October 10.
The Cube comes with an IR extender cable and Ethernet adapter in the box.
Customers can also pre-order Fire TV Cube and Ring Video Doorbell 2 together for just £218.99 – a saving of £70.
